It May Be Time to Replace Your Water Heater

Last week we discussed problems with a water heater that can result in you not receiving sufficient hot water. Repairs can often fix these troubles, but not always. At a certain point, a water heater will no longer be able to perform to its previous level, and the best option is to have it replaced.

There are a number of signs to watch for that indicate a water heater is at the point where it needs a replacement. Below are some of the main ones:

  • Basic Age: The standard storage tank water heater can last between 10 and 15 years, so a unit that’s more than 15 years old should be replaced. Tankless systems can last for longer, sometimes as much as 20 years. But pretty much any water heater that’s more than 20 years old is overdue for retirement.
  • Hot water volume decrease: This ties into what we wrote about last week. When a water heater no longer can keep up with the customary demands in your household for hot water (usually noticeable when people start going with lukewarm showers in the morning), then the unit is at the end of its lifespan.
  • Corrosion: Water heaters are designed to defend against corrosion. They will only start to corrode if they are a) neglected and not maintained, or b) too old. In either case, the water heater probably ought to be replaced if it’s showing signs of corrosion.
  • Rising energy bills: A large amount of heating power in your home goes to the water heater. When it starts to waste energy because it’s wearing down, you will notice a significant change in your utility bills. Have professionals check to see if repairs are possible or if you need to get a new water heater.

Here’s another reason to get a replacement soon for your ailing water heater: right now we’re offering a special promotion for water heater replacement where you’ll receive $50 off the service. Give us a call for more details.
