The bathrooms in your house use the most freshwater of any location. Just a single bathroom can account for more than 50% of all freshwater used in the house.
The shower is one of the appliances that uses the most freshwater around the year. (Only the toilets account for more.) Trouble with the plumbing in a shower can be a terrible inconvenience: you may end up with a shower that won’t send out cold water—or, conversely, only sends out water that’s too hot—or which won’t turn on at all. This is never something you want to discover early in the morning!
Fortunately, for help with your plumbing in Cincinnati, OH, such as fast repairs for a broken shower, you can count on Ken Neyer. We can fix whatever is ailing your shower plumbing or other parts of the bathroom plumbing.
Common Shower Troubles
Pretty much anything that can affect plumbing pipes can affect a shower. As soon as you notice the problems below, call for a plumber to look into the issue, since there are different possibilities for the source.
- Low water pressure: The shower comes on, but the force of the water from the shower head is so weak that it’s hard to take an actually useful shower. If the shower is the only appliance showing this problem, then the showerhead may need to be cleaned of silt build-up and limescale. This is something you can do on your own by soaking the shower head in vinegar. If the water pressure trouble is occurring throughout the house, it may be a municipal problem, and you can find out if it is by checking to see if your neighbors have similar problems. If it’s just your house, call professional plumbers to find out what’s happening.
- Temperature troubles: If you notice that the water in the shower won’t warm up the way it should, you might at first think you’ve got a water heater problem. However, if only the shower has the issue with colder water or the temperature of the water is inconsistent, the problem could be a broken mixing valve, which a plumber will have to repair. If you hear a rattling in the pipes, it means the hot and cold water is mixing where they shouldn’t. This will help the plumber find out what’s wrong.
- Drain clogs: Unfortunately, this is probably the most common trouble a shower can run into. A large amount of soap and hair goes down a shower drain, and this can easily create bad clogging. If a simple plunger won’t clear the drain—and it often can’t when it comes to hair and soap scum clogs—allow a plumber to investigate the stoppage. Plumbers recommend using special drain caps and strainers in the shower drain to help keep hair from creating future clogs.
