If your old water heater is at the end of its service life, you have a number of different choices when it comes to replacing it. Below are 3 kinds of water heaters you can pick for your new system.
1. The Storage Tank Water Heater
I.e. the “standard” water heater, and probably the type you already have in place. This model of water heater stores water in a large tank and keeps it at a consistent temperature so that it’s ready for use. A tank water heater is dependable and delivers hot water quickly to taps. If you don’t want to change to a new type of water heater, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to a storage tank water heater. The new one will probably be more energy efficient than the old one ever was.
2. The Tankless Water Heater
This is the most popular alternative to the conventional water heater. A tankless water heater operates by applying heat via a heat exchanger to the water moving through the pipes. The heat exchanger only turns on when there’s a demand for water, and that means the system uses much less power than a tank water heater. It also means that there’s no standing water supply to deplete, so the water heater cannot run out of water. These benefits make the tankless water heater an attractive choice.
3. The Heat Pump Water Heater
This type of water heater has a storage tank, but the way it applies heat to it is much different than either an electric or natural gas tank water heater. A heat pump water heater draws thermal energy from the air around the system using an evaporator coil and then uses that energy to heat up the water. This is a great way to save energy, since it takes much less power to move pre-existing heat, rather than generating it with gas burners or electrical resistance heating elements.
